The need was great and the United Ways of New Jersey responded. Working with New Jersey's Board of Public Utilities, they secured the 2-1-1 dialing code to create an easy-to-access, statewide portal for information about health and human services, government programs, and local community resources. In 2002, the NJ 2-1-1 Partnership, a subsidiary of United Ways of New Jersey, was designated as the sole administrator of the three-digit dialing code. NJ 211 opened its call lines in 2005 as a result of this effort. Today, NJ 211 responds to more than 1,000,000 requests for help annually.
