NJ 2-1-1 is now an affiliate agency for the TRUE (Temporary Relief for Utility Expenses) program, an annual program intended to provide assistance to residents who are struggling to pay their electric and natural gas bills. NJ residents of low-to-moderate income living anywhere in the state can now dial 211 from any phone in the state and begin the application process.
The staff has been trained to begin this process by screening callers to ensure that program eligibility requirements are met. To be eligible for TRUE, applicants must satisfy income guidelines and several other criteria. Once program eligibility has been verified, NJ 2-1-1 call specialists will review the application process with the caller specifying the documents that must be submitted with the completed application.
Callers who have access to a computer and printer are instructed to download the TRUE application or, if they prefer, NJ 2-1-1 will send the application to them. Once the completed application and required documentation is returned to NJ 2-1-1, the staff will finish the application process by submitting it through a secure internet platform to the Affordable Housing Alliance, the agency responsible for overseeing the administration of this and other home energy assistance programs. Applicants are educated on how they may monitor the progress of their application review online and are also encouraged to check back with NJ 2-1-1 if they prefer.
Information about the TRUE program and other utility assistance programs is available in the utility section of our website. Here readers will find comprehensive information about each program’s eligibility criteria, gain access to applications that can be downloaded and learn about the intended benefits associated with them.
