2-1-1 Call Centers See a 600% Spike in Tax-Related Calls

In anticipation of much needed relief, we focused our efforts on educating citizens about existing tax-related resources this spring and provided useful information to callers and Web visitors throughout the tax season. Community Resource Specialists were well equipped to inform the high volume of callers about specific Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites, choosing from a total of 372 locations throughout the state. Eligible clients were also encouraged to complete applications for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program. Web site visitors frequented our income tax page throughout March and April where they were able to access information about these programs and other related topics, and download a cost-saving coupon from H&R Block.

Emergency Energy Assistance Eases Financial Crunch
NJ 211 assisted PSE&G in their effort to help low income customers pay their energy bills through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. PSE&G encouraged over 10,000 clients who met the income eligibility requirements to call 2-1-1 to get information on how to apply for this emergency assistance that had the potential to save each family as much as $1,000 in heating costs.

Vital Connections Make the Most of Scarce Resources
Whether it is through an alliance with PSE&G to help them spread word about an Energy Assistance program; a partnership with the Department of Homeland Security to assist in the registering of people with special needs in the coastal counties most susceptible to hurricanes; or a link with mental health professionals that provides them with easy access to information about bed availability at residential facilities throughout the state, NJ 211 is working closely with corporations, government and professionals – providing a vital connection that leads to efficient use of resources at a time of critical need.

Getting the Word Out – “Need Help? Start Here!”
Our intention is to make sure that every New Jersey citizen thinks to dial 2-1-1 or access information through www.nj211.org when they need help and don’t know where to turn. That is why we have taken to the airways in select Shop Rite, Pathmark and Wal-Mart stores throughout the state. For the next two months, when residents are waiting in the check-out line, we hope they’ll hear our 30 second Public Service Announcement that portrays different everyday concerns and ends with a line to remember: - 2-1-1 - When you need help. Start Here.” See the PSA now.

A ten-second message will also air during the month of June on Millennium Radio following the 5 PM news and weather. The station reaches over 1.4 million commuters who are traveling any of the major roadways from the New York tunnels to the Philadelphia bridges. What we want them to remember is this, “When you need help with problems big or small - DIAL 2-1-1 or go to nj211.org - a free and simple first step towards finding a solution. Contact someone who cares. Call 2-1-1 today.”
